Treating the Symptoms of Alzheimer's

Cutting-Edge Research-Based Programming

Senior Living Residences worked with leading clinicians and researchers, including staff from the Boston University School of Medicine’s Alzheimer’s Disease Center, to create an array of cutting edge research-based programming to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in a comfortable, dignified residential setting. In combination, these innovative programs comprising Compass Memory Support not only treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, they may potentially slow its progression.

Reconnections Program

We developed a curriculum-based adult learning program backed by research that cognitive stimulation may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s, and that individuals with Alzheimer's still have the ability to learn. Our rich courses are focused on residents’ past and present interests and developed to elicit an engaged response, as well as provide residents with a way to re-connect with past experiences, re-engage with past learned materials, and benefit from the joy of learning. The Reconnections Program takes place in an interactive, socially stimulating setting, focused on achieving new learning and keeping minds active. Brain Healthy Cooking

Although there is no current treatment proven to cure Alzheimer's disease or dementia, a growing body of scientific research shows a clear connection between specific foods and spices and overall brain health. We now know that "brain healthy" eating can provide protective body and brain health benefits for people of any age. Senior Living Residences is committed to advancing public knowledge about this research in an effort to promote prevention and potentially halt the advance of Alzheimer’s disease. This is why the we created www.BrainHealthyCooking.com.

Lifetime Achievement Award

SLR’s Lifetime Achievement Award program offers an antidote to the isolation and anonymity experienced by individuals with memory loss. Its purpose is to personalize and individualize how SLR associates relate to residents, as well as support their families.

Clinical Consultation to Reduce Hospitalizations

SLR has partnered with a medical professional from the BU School of Medicine Alzheimer’s Disease Center who conducts “Grand Rounds” with SLR’s Compass Program Directors to discuss resident behaviors and develop plans to prevent hospitalization.

Medication Assessment Program

Medication errors are a leading cause of hospitalizations among the elderly. SLR’s Medication Assessment Program, in partnership with an experienced clinical pharmacist, provides a thorough evaluation of medications, identifying potential medication conflicts and related safety risks.

Exercise

It is well known that regular exercise is essential for cardiac health and research now shows that it is associated with a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s. SLR’s exercise program focuses on aerobic activity, building endurance, and maintaining strength. SLR has partnered with Tufts University on the VIVE (Vitality, Independence, and Vigor in Elders) study – researching the effects of exercise and nutrition on elders.

Music

The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function reports that early research on the therapeutic effects of music indicates that it may help improve scores on cognitive function tests. In addition, music improves the mood, alertness and quality of life of someone living with Alzheimer’s disease and can be used as a powerful tool. Given the proven positive effects of music, SLR is piloting a new program at Compass on the Bay creating individualized listening programs (play-lists) for residents with memory loss, based on their own favorite music, responses to songs and recollections. The program has gotten off to a great start. Read more about the program on our blog.
