Hopkinton, MA (March 7, 2011) – Compass at Hopkinton, a state-of-the-art Memory Support Assisted Living community serving seniors with memory loss throughout the Metrowest area and Worcester County, celebrated its Grand Opening on March 3rd. The new 40-apartment community features several bright and open community areas including a sun/art room, living room, dining room with stone fireplace, and cafe.

Senior Living Residences (SLR), a Boston-based assisted living company that owns and operates the new community, takes a new approach by actually treating the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Compass at Hopkinton is also unique in that it addresses the needs of seniors exhibiting the early symptoms of memory loss – often called Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), as well as those with diagnosed Alzheimer’s. MCI is marked by memory loss and mild confusion, and is often described as the stage between forgetfulness associated with normal aging and Alzheimer’s. SLR’s innovative research-based programs are designed to treat this group of seniors, and potentially delay the progression of their dementia.

Tadd Clelland, Executive Director of Compass at Hopkinton, and an SLR principal, said, “Our team has 20 years of experience serving Massachusetts seniors with memory loss. We are excited to bring our research-based Compass Memory Support Neighborhood treatment program to the MetroWest area, to help meet the growing need for top-notch dignified residential care for individuals with dementia.”

Alzheimer’s disease currently affects 5 million Americans. Research shows that already 10 percent of those over age 65 and 50 percent of those over 85 have memory loss. Given increasing life expectancy, approximately half of families will be caring for a loved one with the disease in the future.

At the Grand Opening local elder care professionals, community leaders and the general public toured the newly renovated community, which is located within the well-established Golden Pond Assisted Living campus in Hopkinton, and observed for themselves SLR’s Alzheimer’s care difference.

Representing the Boston University School of Medicine’s Alzheimer’s Disease Center, with which SLR is formerly affiliated, was Dr. Robert Stern, co-Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Clinical Program. Dr. Stern said, “Senior Living Residences is one of the most innovative and expert senior living and Alzheimer’s care organizations around the country and I am proud to be affiliated with them. I salute their talented team for the multi-dimensional treatment program they have developed which includes nutrition, learning/cognitive therapy, and physical exercise, all based on the latest research. Through our affiliation, the BU’s Alzheimer’s Disease Center helps to keep SLR abreast of the current science, and provides residents living in SLR’s Compass Memory Support Neighborhoods with access to medical assessments and treatment, and opportunities to participate in important research studies.”
