Framingham, MA (March 25, 2011) – Research tells us that proper nutrition is essential to defending against deterioration due to age and disease.  Did you know that by following a brain-healthy diet you can effectively delay the onset or progression of Alzheimer’s disease?

Senior Living Residences (SLR), a pioneer in Massachusetts’ senior living industry, is putting research to practice in its dining programs, and along with Boston University’s Dr. Nancy Emerson Lombardo, is working to share this vital knowledge with the public.  Sponsored by SLR’s newest community Compass at Hopkinton Memory Support Assisted Living and the Metrowest Alzheimer’s Partnership, this past Thursday at the Callahan Framingham Senior Center, fifty seniors and eldercare professionals gathered to learn about the Memory Preservation Nutrition® Program.  At this event, Dr. Emerson Lombardo led a high-level discussion about the unique principles and benefits of the program, while SLR’s Director of Dietary Services Kim Smith offered attendees signature brain-healthy recipes to take home.

Senior Living Residences is the first assisted living company in the nation to implement the Memory Preservation Nutrition® program, developed by internationally recognized expert Nancy Emerson Lombardo, PhD, adjunct research assistant professor of neurology at the Boston University School of Medicine and President of HealthCare Insights, LLC.

The main foods that are recommended in the Memory Preservation Nutrition® program include:

Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially leafy green vegetables

Specific spices

Whole grains

Foods containing omega-three fatty acid

The diet also focuses on reducing cholesterol and substituting healthy fats (omega 3 and mono-unsaturated fats) for saturated and trans-fats foods. Another major feature of the program is reducing the amount of refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup in one’s overall diet. All of the healthy foods featured in the program in the right combinations provide the body with important disease-fighting antioxidants, nutrients with anti-inflammatory properties and also help to regulate blood sugar. These changes are all important for brain health.
